This couple came to us knowing what they wanted — something modern, substantial, and a little unexpected. He's a merchant seaman and she's a US Navy veteran, and they both have an eye for things that are built to work and built to last.
The 60″ top is solid black walnut, 1½″ thick, edge-glued and flattened in our shop. A continuous brass inlay runs the full circumference just inside the edge — hand-routed and pressed flush before finishing. It felt like the right call for this couple: a clean nautical nod without being on the nose about it. The top is finished with Rubio Monocoat Pure, which lets the walnut speak for itself while giving it real protection.
The base is solid maple, shaped into an interlocking arch form and finished in black paint — a strong contrast against the warm walnut top. They specifically requested recessed casters, so the table can move when they need it to without compromising the look. They're set flush into the base feet so you barely notice them until you need them.
She said it was exactly what she pictured. That's the best kind of delivery.
